Research, Multimedia Presentation and
Multicultural Quilt:
Role:
You are a sociologist who has been asked by the government of Canada to
investigate one of the ethnic cultural groups that makes up part of our
multicultural fabric. You are going to study a particular ethnic group
in Canada to determine which aspects of their culture they have retained
and how they have contributed to our Canadian culture.
Audience:
Minister of Immigration or Minister of Culture
Purpose:
To persuade the Minister of Immigration or Minister of Culture that the
contributions made by this group have had a positive impact on our Canadian
culture.
Format:
You will create a multimedia presentation that provides insight and understanding
of the ethnic group that you have chosen to focus on. You must also contribute
a square to be added to our multicultural quilt symbolizing the contributions
to Canada that the ethnic group you have studied has provided. Your overall
purpose in this inquiry is to create greater understanding of the culture
you studied while highlighting their achievements and contributions to
Canada.
Procedure:
Individual Research- Respecting Our
Differences
Interview:
Your investigation will include an interview
of somebody representing the cultural group you are studying (in person,
over the phone, or through email)
- Before you contact the person you wish
to interview prepare a list of questions that you want to ask. You should
have no more than about 5-7 questions that are really important.
- Decide on a method of recording the
responses to your questions. If possible and if the person agrees see
if you can tape record the interview so that you can capture the information
accurately.
- Remember to introduce yourself and explain
the purpose of your interview.
- Be sure to thank the person at the end
of the interview.
Use online resources, information provided
by various agencies working with ethnic groups, the library and any other
resources you find to research your cultural group. Use the features of
culture identified on your concept map to focus your inquiry.
Background:
Include information related to the the
following ideas as part of your research:
Trace the immigration experience of the
culture that you have chosen to study where it came from originally,
where in Canada they originally settled and where in Canada they are now.
(Offer a possible explanation for this settlement pattern)
Why did these people choose to come to Canada (examine push/pull factors)
| Identify the challenges and difficulties
that this group experienced and how they overcame them. |
| What has this group added to the Canadian
multicultural fabric or mosaic? What have we as Canadians, adopted
of this culture? |
| What aspects of this culture have
been in conflict with Canadian cultural norms? How could such conflicts
be resolved? |
| How do members of the cultural group
that you are investigating express their cultural identity? What aspects
of their culture have they chosen to retain? What aspects of this
culture need to be preserved? Why? |
| To what extent should individuals
of an ethnic group be expected to conform to the dominant Canadian
culture? |
| How do institutions such as the family,
education and religion affect one's ability to retain their culture? |
| What role does communication (language,
art, technology, media) play in transmitting and maintaining cultural
beliefs and values? |
| How do customs, traditions and laws
influence the retention of culture? |
| Determine whether the culture you
have studies has been assimilated, whether they are adapting, or whether
they are at the cultural retention stage. Provide specific evidence
to support your conclusion. |
| What recommendations do you have about
the retention of culture? What should governments do? What should
be their role in helping people either maintain or abandon their cultural
heritage? What role should individuals play in maintaining their own
cultural heritage and in helping others do the same? |
Save a copy of your
research notes as your name and submit them into the designated
folder in the teacher's drop box.
Multimedia Presentation
Use the information from your research
notes to create a multimedia presentation illustrating your understanding
of the ethnic group you have studied and to persuade the Ministers of
Culture and immigration of the achievements and contributions this group
has made to Canada. Be sure to include your recommendations about allowing
this group to maintain their cultural heritage. Use images, sounds, text
and your own narration to communicate and demonstrate your understanding.
Quilt
Create a square to contribute to our multicultural
quilt (paper or fabric) symbolizing the contributions that the ethnic
group you have studied, has provided to Canada. Include a written explanation
of your square that demonstrates your understanding of this groups
achievements and contributions to Canada.
