Girls Basketball Season Update

This year’s senior girls’ basketball team has shown great improvement already. The girls, Irina Liakhar, Tay-Lynne Hunt, Liz Steele, Jenna Graff, Taylor Shelley, Madison Morris, Bobi Edelman, Erin Davis, Kristina Gieck, Shelby Lausen, and Caitlyn Woodcock have put in a lot of time and it is paying off. Coaches, Mar-nai Yellowhorn, Chay Yellowhorn, and Mr. Koller have done excellent work with the team and have never given up on them.
At the first tournament of the season the girls left empty handed. On the second tournament in Red Deer the girls did better winning third on the consolation side and then the third tournament the girls finally came together to pull off a first place finish. Improvement is clear just by looking at the scores, but if you were to come to one of the practices you would see the girls having fun and getting along while playing their hardest, despite a few missed passes or shots.

Mar- Nai has played college basketball and is an amazing player. She still finds the time to coach the girls, thankfully, while playing woman’s basketball herself. Coach has a lot of things that she can teach the team, including the dance to “Thriller”.
On Friday the 29th there will be a pep rally to get the school in Cougar spirit. The girl’s basketball team will pair up with the boy’s basketball team and have a shooting competition. Whichever partnership wins will get a prize. The girls will be doing the Thriller dance also to get the school in spirit to cheer them on for zones in Okotoks.
On February 29 the team headed out to Okotoks with high spirits. They lost their first and second games to some good teams. On Saturday the game that was supposed to happen was cancelled for unknown reasons and the girls came fifth in the zone. The team got to end on a good note when they won the banner. It was a scene of screaming and cheering when the buzzer went off. There were a few tears for the end of the season and for some girls the end of junior high basketball.
After all of the pain, sweat, and tears the season was a success and completely worth it. The coaches are greatly appreciated with all the work they put in and we would like to thank them immensely. The team also wants to thank Mr.Lein for arranging everything. It’s sad that it’s over but the team has high hopes for the years to come.
