To Act or not to Act
Megan - 9F Journalism
Lights! Camera! Action! Every year the drama club puts on about two plays a year. Sometimes there is only one or even none. The director of the play is usually Mrs. Sorenson. Sometimes other people, like other teachers, help out. She has to give up her lunches just so we can act out a play for people to watch. Sometimes working with us can be very hectic and annoying but usually she gets through it. Students of all ages can act in the plays. All you really need to do is work hard, don’t goof off, and MEMORIZE your lines. Memorizing your lines is a very important thing to do. This is because you could jeopardize the people in the play with you and it just looks bad when you’re sitting (or standing) with a confused/blank look on your face. Even if you memorize your lines the night of the play, it’s fine, just try not to forget. Forgetting your lines and making mistakes are different though, if you make a small mistake it’s ok. Usually the other person can improvise the lines to make it work.
This year the drama club didn’t have a drama play because nobody would show up. Usually if you want to be in a play you have to show up, it’s very crucial. If so many people don’t show up, it’s very hard to practice, because nobody is there for the right scenes. So next time you want to be in a drama production you should actually show up. It is ok if you miss maybe one practice, but try not to miss more because it could affect the whole play.
Practicing for drama club isn’t after school, it’s during lunch. If you don’t want to give up your lunch then don’t join it. I would suggest it because working in drama productions is actually fun. You get to work with your friends and you can sometimes fool around. But mostly you get to act. If you are a person who likes to act then you would definitely like to be in drama club if you don’t have drama as an option. Even if you don’t like to act you can work on lighting or backstage when it’s the day of the play. You can also work on the sets and costumes. |
Working on the sets is like painting the backgrounds. Working backstage is just organizing the props, making sure we have all of the props, and making sure they work. Every job is important in a drama play. If one thing goes wrong then sometimes lots of things go wrong. Especially if one person doesn’t show up because they are sick. This is usually bad because it’s hard to find a replacement last minute. Sometimes the plays have two actors/actresses for each role.
