Get To Work!

Jessica Steffens - 9E Journalism

“GET A JOB!” That’s probably what you would hear everyday from your workaholic parents. Make money, be more responsible for yourself, wait, you’re only a teen. But, if you are one of those teens looking to make some extra money, especially in a little opportunity town like ours, this is for you.

First of all, is where you want to work, Strathmore offers many jobs waiting for you to walk in and apply. It’s not like you have much experience so start off small. For most jobs in town, you’ll need a resume. Start off simple with a few insights from old babysitting jobs or even teachers around you to tell your future employer how great you are. Building a resume is about showing that you’re putting effort into getting your job, not all jobs ask for one, especially at our age, but it is helpful to have one just in case.

On the hunt or thoughts of getting your first job, keep some of these tips in mind at http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/justforstudents/a/parttimejob.htm.

What you should include:

-Education-you should include your average in school, and possibly the subjects you thrive in.

-Previous Jobs- something as little as babysitting can be included in your resume, babysitting shows you are good with kids and somewhat a people person. Also, previous employment at even small summer jobs can get you a push into the new business you’re applying to.

-Positive Characteristics- employers don’t only want to know about what you can do, but no one wants to work with someone they don’t like. Presenting yourself with a good personality can help you on your way to getting your first job.

-Skills- these aren’t skills such as “I play soccer and have scored 6 goals in one game,” or anything like that. Little things like being good with children or being responsible are good skills looked at when applying.

-Other- such things as being an organized person is something any employer would want to hear from you or your references.

Getting Out There
Volunteering; it may seem like a bad idea because really it is no pay. But, when you are a teen with little or no experience it might be just what you need. Even a small volunteer’s job at the vet clinic can help you in the future and even in your next part time job.

It’s not easy as it is, starting out without any money, jobs, or references to get a job. Most starting out jobs, for example a bus-girl, grocery store bagging, etc, will take in new employees without any previous employment. Especially in a small town like our own, around here people are begging for new employees to come looking for an application.

Now that you’ve possibly got the job taking responsibility and good attendance is a good way to start. Showing up for work too early isn’t a good thing, but showing up right when expected is the way to go. Also taking responsibility and not goofing around on the job shows you are serious.
