Volleyball season has started and gone by fast. The senior girl’s volleyball team consists of Ali Lundy, Liz Steele, Irina Liakhar, Shelby Lausen, Taylor Shelley, Madison Morris, Tay-Lynne Hunt, Ashley Tuff, and Jessica Griffiths. The year started out rough with a whole new team, but eventually got better.
With only nine girls on the team there isn’t much wiggle room. Most of the girls play other sports too and there are lots of conflicts. The team has also had their fair share of injuries but have managed to pull through. Taylor Shelley is out for a while with a pulled stomach muscle and the girls have had the odd hurt finger.

Mr. Lein works hard to keep the girls in line and out of giggling fits. He has put a lot of time in and we know the girls appreciate it. He has been coaching for a number of years and is very experienced. He isn’t afraid to tell us when we’re being pathetic and knows when we’re trying our hardest. He coaches the practices every Monday and Wednesday even though his own daughter does a number of other sports.
The girls started the season at the largest volleyball centre in western Canada, Rally Pointe. It was a long hard day and they tried their best. They didn’t come out with a placing but came out with lots of enthusiasm for their next tournament, Three Hills.
In Three Hills the girls got better as they went. They worked their way into a semi-final and came out with a 3rd place finish. The team also went to Medicine Hat on the 26th and 27th of October. They made it to the semi-finals in tier three. The girls have a tournament in Brooks coming up and also a home tournament. We’re all looking forward to hosting zones on the 24th of November.

The south central zones were held by the girl’s volleyball team at Crowther. Six teams attended the tournament. They were Brooks, Olds, Canmore, Okotoks, John Paul, and Crowther. It started early in the morning and as the day progressed it became more intense. The cougars tried their hardest but unfortunately fell short, losing all three games they played.
The Canmore girls proudly took home third and Okotoks came in second. Brooks happily placed first and took home the banner. The volleyball season is over for the Cougars, but it ended with much improvement. The girls were all sad that they couldn’t have placed higher but with
Mr. Lein’s encouraging words they all felt better. And so the season ended on a great note. Good luck to all people trying out for basketball!! |
