“If you’ve given a dollar, you’re part of the Marathon of Hope”– Terry Fox

Written by Ben Conley & Brady Ingram - Journalism 9E

This year at CMJHS we had an amazing Terry Fox Run. The school made over $7550 in fund raisings. All the money raised is going to the cancer research fund. It will help people all over the world that have cancer. It will make people’s lives much better in the future. After we found that out we were really happy that every one at CMJHS School is making a difference in other people’s lives.

We interviewed a few people that participated in the Terry Fox Run. The first one we interviewed was Daniel Kun, an exchange student from Korea. After we dragged him away from his Language Arts homework we started to talk:

“Did you get any money?”
“I got 2 dollars” was his reply. The next question was:
“Did you do any Terry Fox runs while in Korea?” his reply was
“No.” We then asked him,
“What was your favorite part of the run and, who did you run with?”
 He said
“I liked doing the run with Moses”, another exchange student from Korea.
We then interviewed a few other people from our school and they all said in one way or another; we want to support people with cancer and we want to help beat it so people don’t have to suffer anymore.

Terry fox’s Marathon of Hope started April 12, 1980, it still goes on today. People all over the world participate in an annual Terry Fox Run. Terry Fox, age 18 was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a cancer in the bones; he had to get his leg amputated. He started his Marathon of Hope to help kids that have cancer. He started in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He ran for 18 months, 5000 kilometers, to train for this event. He had little fanfare at the beginning, but enthusiasm began to mount. He ran 42 kilometers a day through Ontario and Quebec. On September first, 143 days and 5373 kilometers later, outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario he found out that cancer had now appeared in his lungs. The whole population of Canada was stunned. Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981; he was only 22 years old. Now 26 years later, the world wide Terry Fox Run has raised over 400 million dollars.
